After installing ACT!, you open a Word Document with an embedded Excel file to find that the status of the embedded file changes to an object that cannot be updated or changed.

This is a known issue.

You can often work around this issue by removing the Word/Excel integration and renaming the Microsoft Word file named Normal.dot.

Follow the steps below:

Close all programs including ACT!
Click the Windows Start button, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
Enter the following version specific text into the Open field (including the quotes)

ACT! 2006
“C:\Program Files\ACT\ACT for Windows\RegAsm.exe” /unregister “C:\Program Files\ACT\ACT for Windows\Act.Office.Addin.dll”

ACT! 2005
“C:\Program Files\ACT\ACT for Win 7\RegAsm.exe” /unregister “C:\Program Files\ACT\ACT for Win 7\Act.Office.Addin.dll”

Click OK. A DOS window may briefly appear as the target file is unregistered.
Use the Windows Search function to locate the Microsoft Word file named Normal.dot.
Once this file is located, right-click the Normal.dot file, and then click Rename from the shortcut menu.
Rename the file to Normal.old. If you locate more then one file with this name, rename each copy in the same way.
Close the Search Results window and test editing the embedded Excel file(s) within your Word document.

Note: Disabling the office plugin in ACT! may result in no longer having the default location for templates set to the network location.
